Beginners Yoga!  It’s About Time, to honest, I’ve only tried yoga once or twice and I wasn’t completely crazy about it. I think the primary reason was that I knew nothing about yoga and was not familiar with yoga posture or yoga etiquette… I was intimidated, overwhelmed, and very self-conscious.

Sure, everyone knows Cat and Downward Dog, and maybe even Child’s pose, but Warrior, Tree Pose, Mountain Pose, Cobra, Cow, Hare… oh my goodness I was lost. Both times it seemed like I was the only beginner in the class. Everyone else jumped right in with unbelievable flexibility, strength and knowledge.

I quickly learned you cannot fake it in yoga, while I teetered and tottered and even moaned in pain multiple times – that was super embarrassing because of the quiet nature of the class. Another lesson learned, is that I am not comfortable with silence – it definitely increased my performance anxiety!

Determined to integrate yoga into my fitness routine. As I get older I have increased aches and pains, more challenges with my flexibility and range of movement, I don’t sleep as well as I used to, I’m easily distracted and I have a fair amount of stress factors present on a daily basis. Intuitively, I know yoga will help me manage all of these issues.

I know I am not alone. Over the years I have spoken to many people who have an interest in yoga, but because of a bad experience or two, are hesitant to try it again. It helps to know I’m not in this alone!

I have decided it’s time for me to do my part to fix this…at least here at Fit Phoenix!

During the month of August we are hosting beginners yoga in Downtown Phoenix. In this workshop you will have a chance to learn, at a beginner’s pace. Our mantra is “No yogi wanna-be left behind!”

 

The instructor will provide just enough education about yoga. In this class you will learn that yoga is a discipline that encompasses both physical and mental wellbeing. It’s all about breath control, simple meditation and body movement. You will learn about the origins of yoga and the different types and levels of practice. Your instructor will break down the poses and give you lots of individual attention.

The Basic Yoga 101 Workshop kicks off Monday, August 7th at 7:00 p.m. We will meet in the Studio at Fit Phoenix every Monday and Wednesday through the month of August. The cost for the workshop is $159. It includes your very own Fit Phoenix yoga mat.
